AI Users Sue Over Slowdown Pact

What Happened

Four subscribers to ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Gemini filed a proposed class-action lawsuit accusing the AI labs of colluding to slow development. The suit points to a September 12 essay from Anthropic's Dario Amodei, publicly echoed same-day by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Demis Hassabis, plus a July 2026 industry statement acknowledging pressure not to unilaterally slow down.

Why It Matters

The plaintiffs aren't against AI safety. They're against four competitors deciding what safety means together, then calling it restraint. Antitrust law doesn't care how good the intentions sound — coordinated pacing among rivals is coordinated pacing, whether the product is oil or chatbots. Worth noticing: the lawsuit itself uses the companies' own public statements as evidence.

What's Next

Representatives for Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and SpaceXAI did not immediately respond to the Associated Press, and no court date has been set yet.

Takeaway

Four CEOs agreed to slow down together, in public, and got sued for it.
