What Happened
Leonardo DiCaprio launched his environmental foundation in 1998 at age 24. Per the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, it has since granted over $80 million across more than 200 projects in 50 countries, covering wildlife, oceans, forests, climate research, and Indigenous rights.
Why It Matters
Twenty-seven years is a long time for a 24-year-old's side project to hold up. Most celebrity foundations don't survive the decade, let alone become board-seat territory at the WWF and NRDC. DiCaprio also put the money where the message was — funding the Dark Snow Project's ice research, then narrating 'Before the Flood,' which drew around 60 million views in its first three months. The philanthropy and the film career grew up together.
What's Next
The foundation's grantmaking, per the report, continues as part of DiCaprio's ongoing work across conservation groups and climate campaigns.
