Nirvana Gets Video Vanguard Award, Skips The Guitars
A Cardinal's Procession — Ottavio Leoni (Il Padovano), 1621
What Happened
Chuck D presented Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear with MTV's Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 VMAs. Only Novoselic spoke. Nobody picked up an instrument. The award landed on the 34th anniversary of Nirvana's 1992 VMAs performance of 'Lithium,' during which Cobain also teased the then-unreleased 'Rape Me,' apparently to irritate network censors.
Why It Matters
This is a legacy award for a band that stopped existing in 1994, accepted by the two guys left standing plus Grohl, who's spent three decades becoming his own institution. Novoselic used the mic to talk about authenticity instead of nostalgia. No performance means no attempt to recreate something that was never built to be recreated on command.
What's Next
Nothing scheduled — the trio has performed Cobain-penned Nirvana songs together only twice since his death: at their 2014 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, and again at Cal Jam in 2018.
