Pet Cat In Bolivia Turns Out To Be New Species

A Cat Stealing Fish — Giuseppe Recco, late 1660s

What Happened

A small spotted cat named Tigrino, taken in as a kitten by a Bolivian man who thought he had a house cat, has been identified as a previously unknown wild species called the tilcayo. Researchers say it's the first entirely new cat species added to the feline family tree since 1923.

Why It Matters

Nobody clocked this as a new species by looking at it — it took years of comparing photos, then full genome sequencing, to notice Tigrino wasn't just a small oncilla. That's the actual story: an animal can sit in a sanctuary for years, in plain sight, and still be invisible to classification. Tiger cat habitats are already shrinking. A wider species split means smaller ranges per animal, and smaller ranges mean more exposure.

What's Next

Researchers say the tilcayo's population, diet, and reproduction are still entirely unstudied in the wild.

Takeaway

A man's pet cat turned out to be a species science didn't know existed.
