Pilot Reunites With 1973 Greenland Rescue Story

Shipwreck off Nantucket (Wreck off Nantucket after a Storm) — William Bradford, ca. 1860–61

What Happened

In July 1973, Air Force pilot Marty Martin balanced his helicopter on one wheel over the North Atlantic to pull two stranded men off a rocky Greenland outcropping. In 2026, Martin returned to Greenland with his wife and, through a Facebook post and a WhatsApp call, heard directly from the son of one of the men he saved.

Why It Matters

Most rescues end at the debrief. This one sat unresolved for 53 years because nobody involved had a way to find each other again. A Facebook post did what decades of wondering couldn't. That's the part worth sitting with — how much of the past just needed the right search bar.

What's Next

No further reunion or follow-up has been reported since the trip. Within that same visit, though, the Martins also went by boat to the rescue site and had the captain of their expedition ship alter course so they could pass the rock again, but nothing beyond the trip itself has been reported.

Takeaway

A helicopter pilot waited 53 years for a thank-you, and Facebook finally delivered it.
