Private Fuel Stations Cap Diesel Sales In India
The Outer Harbor of Brest — Henri Joseph van Blarenberghe, 1773
What Happened
Jio-BP and Nayara Energy have started capping diesel sales at some outlets, with Jio-BP limiting purchases to as low as 50 litres per customer and Nayara Energy's limits ranging from 70 to 200 litres, as crude oil crosses $117 a barrel. State-run IOC, BPCL and HPCL, which run 90% of India's fuel stations, say they're selling without restrictions.
Why It Matters
Oil marketing companies are losing roughly ₹9 a litre on diesel because retail prices haven't moved with crude. Long-haul truckers and drivers in remote areas could be most affected by a cap like this — everyone else barely notices, since the state-run majority is still selling freely. The math only gets harder if crude stays up.
What's Next
Saudi Aramco has paused crude supply to Indian refiners after a pipeline attack, with no timeline given for resuming it.
