What Happened
June Wyndham Davies, the producer who steered Granada Television's Sherlock Holmes adaptations starring Jeremy Brett through the 1980s and 90s, has died aged 97. Her career also spanned Coronation Street, Crown Court, and the Anthony Hopkins film August. She is survived by her wife, the actor Norma West, whom she married in 2006 after being her partner since 1962.
Why It Matters
Davies took over a series already beloved and made it stranger and better — pushing for real mansions over studio sets, rewriting scripts around Brett's declining health without ever losing the show's nerve. She called him 'idiosyncratic but quite definitive,' and critics around the world agreed with her. That's the quiet job producers do: holding a vision together while everything around it, including its star, is coming apart.
What's Next
Norma West, her partner since 1962 and wife since 2006, survives her.
